These terms refer to whether the lid comes in two pieces (half couch) or one piece (full couch). With half couch caskets or coffins, only the top half is opened up to reveal the deceased from the waist up during viewing, visitation or an open casket funeral. With full couch caskets or coffins, the full length of the body is viewed. Half couch is the most commonly used lid style.
